diatomaceous earth

Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring, soft, siliceous sedimentary rock that crumbles into a fine, off-white powder. Derived from the fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae, it is utilized primarily as a natural pest control agent. Its microscopic, sharp edges are effective in lacerating the exoskeletons of insects, leading to dehydration and death. Non-toxic to humans and pets, diatomaceous earth is used in agriculture for grain storage protection and as an additive in livestock feed to prevent caking. Its pest control properties are valued in residential, commercial, and agricultural settings for managing infestations organically.
