repellent

A repellent is a substance used to deter insects and other pests from approaching or settling on an area, object, or person. Commonly formulated as sprays, lotions, or electronic devices, repellents work by emitting smells or sounds that are unpleasant or disorienting to pests. Chemical repellents often contain ingredients like DEET or picaridin, which interfere with pests' olfactory receptors, while natural repellents might use essential oils such as citronella or eucalyptus. Repellents are essential in pest control strategies to reduce the risk of bites and the transmission of diseases like malaria, Lyme disease, and Zika virus. Their effectiveness varies based on the formulation, concentration of active ingredients, and the type of pest targeted.
